BREASTS ENLARGEMENT - INFANTS

Many newborn boys and girls will have swollen breasts and occasionally some discharge. This is a normal response to maternal hormones and will go away over the next 3 to 4 months. Sometimes the breasts appear larger from 4 to 6 weeks of age. DO NOT SQUEEZE THE BREAST TO EXPRESS THE DISCHARGE OR MILK AS THIS MAY CAUSE DAMAGE AND INFECTION. Call my office if the area becomes reddened, tender or if there is a foul smelling discharge.

ABOVE is normal mild breast hypertrophy in a newborn.

BELOW is MASTITIS or an infected swollen breast.
