VAGINA

About 1 in 100 newborn girls will have a normal period (menses or bloody discharge from the vagina) after birth. The period can be from birth up to 30 days of age, is never more than once, is never more than a few drops, is never more than a few days and never makes your girl sick in any way. About 1 in 12 may just have a yellow streak in the mucus from the vagina. This is a normal response to maternal hormones. Many girls will also have a cheesy white mucus discharge from or about the vagina. This is also normal and will vary in amount and consistency throughout life. The discharge in either case may be cleaned daily or left there, it does not matter, just make sure to get all of the stool out. Should the discharge become bloody after clearing, become profuse or foul smelling, then please call me.
